Transfer data old phone to new phone

Android to Android

There are two things to be done basically. One is to back up the content of your old phone and then restore the data in your new phone from the backup. Steps to backup an Android smartphone

Fully charge both phones and have them connected to the WiFi Go to ‘Settings’ on your old phone and sign into your Google Account if not already done Create a Google account if you do not have one Tap ‘Accounts & sync’ in the ‘Settings’ Turn on ‘Auto-sync data if it is turned off Go to ‘Settings again and click the ‘Backup and reset’ option Ensure that the ‘Backup my data’ option is on Add a backup account for ‘Backup account’ if not already added Ensure that the ‘Automatic restore’ option is turned on

To backup videos and photos

Any photo or video that you take using your phone goes to the Camera Folder and gets backed up automatically to Google Photos. However, it is better to ensure the same. To do that:

Open the ‘Google Photos’ app Click on the ‘Menu’ icon Tap ‘Settings’ Choose ‘Back up & sync’ Ensure that the ‘Back up & sync’ option is turned on and a ‘Backup Account’ is added as well Choose if you want to ‘Back up device folders’

To set up the new Android smartphone and restore data from old phone

Choose the desired language and click ‘Let’s Go’ on the Welcome screen Select ‘Copy your data’ for the restore option Connect to the WiFi to continue On the screen that says ‘Bring your data from…’ choose ‘A backup from the cloud’ Sign into your Google account and agree to their terms From the list of backup options that would appear, choose the most applicable backup to reinstate the data Click on ‘Restore’ to get the data restored from your old phone Hit the ‘Apps’ option to select the app you want to install on your new device Once the initial setup is done, apps and settings would be restored in the background Restore your videos and photos from ‘Google Photos’ by opening it and signing into your Google account You would see the videos and photos on the ‘Photos’ tab

iPhone to iPhone

For phones with iOS 11 or higher

Turn on the new device and place it close to the older one Choose the desired language and click on ‘Continue’ The ‘Quick Start’ screen would request you to set up the new iPhone with your Apple ID Turn on ‘Bluetooth’ if you do not see the option to ‘Continue’ on your old iPhone Once the animation appears on your new device, hold the old phone over the new one Center the animation in the camera viewfinder Wait till you see the message ‘Finish on New Device’ If the camera malfunctions on your new device, click on ‘Authenticate Manually’ Enter the old device’s passcode on the new one when prompted Follow the instructions as it appears to set up Touch ID or Face ID on the new smartphone Choose whether or not you wish to restore data, apps, and settings from your recent iTunes or iCloud backup Agree to the ‘Terms & Conditions’ that appear on screen Hit the ‘Continue’ option under ‘Express Settings to use it for Find My iPhone, Location, Siri, etc. Keep both devices closed to each other while the data is being transferred Ensure to have fully charged the new phone or plug it into power and keep it connected to WiFi to automatically download apps, music, photos, videos, etc. from iCloud

For phones older than iOS 11 In this situation, you need to back up your old phone and then restore the data to your new iPhone from the backup. You can try iCloud and if it does not work, use iTunes.

To backup the device data to iCloud

Connect to WiFi Click on ‘Settings’ Select your name Click on ‘iCloud’ Choose ‘Cloud Backup’ If the ‘iCloud Backup’ is off, turn it On Hit the ‘Back Up Now’ option

To set up and restore data to the new device

Turn on the new device and you would be greeted with a ‘Hello’ on the screen If you have set up the phone already, you need to delete everything to be able to restore the backup from the old phone Set up the iPhone by following the instructions on the screen until you get to the ‘Apps & Data’ screen Click ‘Restore from iCloud Backup’ Sign into ‘iCloud’ with your ‘Apple ID’ Select the backup from the list available The new device will restore and restart

To backup the device data to iTunes

Update iTunes if it is not the latest version Connect the phone to the computer Select your device when it appears in iTunes Click ‘Back Up Now’ under the ‘Manually Back Up and Restore’ option

To set up and restore data to the new device

Turn on the new device and you would be greeted with a ‘Hello’ on the screen If you have set up the phone already, you need to delete everything to be able to restore the backup from the old phone Set up the iPhone by following the instructions on the screen until you get to the ‘Apps & Data’ screen Click ‘Restore from iTunes Backup’ Open iTunes on your computer and connect the iPhone to it Once iTunes recognizes the new device, choose ‘Restore from this backup’ Choose a back from the list of available backups iTunes would restore the new phone from the backup Ensure to keep the phone is connected to the computer Once the restore is complete, the phone would restart and sync with the computer Disconnect the phone from the computer once the syncing is done

Android to iPhone

Before transferring data from an Android smartphone to an iPhone, ensure other iOS devices that you own are turned off to eliminate interference.

Ensure that both devices are connected to the WiFi Download, install and open the ‘Move to iOS’ app on your Android device Turn on the new iPhone and you would be greeted with a ‘Hello’ on the screen Set up the iPhone by following the instructions on the screen until you get to the ‘Apps & Data’ screen Click on the ‘Move Data from Android’ option and choose ‘Continue’ You would receive a code on your iPhone Enter the code in the ‘Move to iOS’ app on your Android phone Chose the data you would like to transfer and click on ‘Next’ Once the transfer is complete on your iPhone, select ‘Continue Setting Up iPhone’ Create a new Apple ID or enter an existing one Proceed with iPhone setup

iPhone to Android

Download the ‘Google Drive’ app on your iPhone Sign into your Google account or create one Click on ‘Settings’ followed by ‘Backup’ Choose ‘Start Backup’ to backup contacts, calendars, photos, videos, etc. Keep the device fully charged or plug it into the power and also ensure the WiFi connection Once the backup is complete, sign into your Google account on the new Android device The data would be transferred from the old iPhone to the new Android smartphone

Connect your old phone to your computer and transfer everything from the phone onto the computer. Then connect your new phone to the computer and transfer the files to the new phone. You can transfer data from your old device to the new one via Bluetooth as well.
