If the tech giant does move to Google custom processor, it will be able to gain greater control over driver updates. The company will no longer have to depend on Qualcomm for driver updates and will be free to update drivers to be compatible with newer versions of Android. It is also a possibility that the new chip will be supported for 5 generations of Android OS updates compared to the current 3 generations of support that Pixel devices currently receive. Design of Google made chip
Google made chip, code-named Whitechapel, is being created in collaboration with Samsung. The state-of-the-art 5-nanometer technology will be employed to manufacture Google custom processor. It is worthy to note, in the past, Samsung has manufactured Apple’s iPhone chips along with its own Exynos processors. The new Google made chip will not only sport an 8-core ARM processor, but will even include hardware optimized for Google’s machine-learning technology. It is also being speculated that a chunk of the Google Pixel processor will be dedicated to improving the performance and “always-on” capabilities of Google Assistant. It will also include an off-the-shelf ARM Mali GPU, and is expected to be fabricated on Samsung’s 5nm manufacturing process. The new Google custom processor is likely to give stiff competition to Apple. It is also expected to hurt Qualcomm, which is known to supply processors for several luxury smartphones, including Google’s Pixel. It is not the first time that the tech tycoon has tried its hands in designing custom chips. In 2016, Google had collaborated with Intelto develop the Pixel Visual Core for the Pixel 2.
